NEWS FLASH: Business Kangaroo Island regarding 'Access by Sea'

24 Sep 2017

Transport, freight and fair access for Kangaroo Island businesses remain the number one concerns for Business Kangaroo Island members.

The BKI Committee has advocated and lobbied on behalf of KI businesses all year on this issue and is determined to make our voice heard as negotiations continue on the upcoming new contract and lease for port facilities at Penneshaw and Cape Jervis.

Our objective is to ensure the needs of business are considered in any new contract, that there is fair pricing, security of services and the opportunity for competition.

This letter to Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan, outlines the concerns of business on Kangaroo Island, and seeking action and response on his part. This is his response.

This week, we have also written to Premier Jay Weatherall, Deputy Premier John Rau, Opposition Leader Steven Marshall, the Essential Services Commission of SA and Shadow Transport Minister David Pisoni.

Also recently, BKI has:

  • Asked both Minister Mullighan and Commissioner for Kangaroo Island Wendy Campana, in writing, for access to the Parson Brinckerhoff report prepared a few years ago about the cost of transport to Kangaroo Island. Unfortunately, we have been informed the document is Cabinet Confidential and we can’t see it.

  • Asked a question of Minister Mullighan at the public forum of Community Cabinet in the Kingscote Town Hall.  Met with Ministers Tom Koutsantonis and Martin Hamilton-Smith during Community Cabinet to make them aware of our requests that business on Kangaroo Island is considered in any transport negotiations.

  • Made our position clear to the Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie through several private meetings, and asked for her assistance where possible.

  • Corresponded with Sealink Manager Donna Gauci, who has agreed to provide information to the public regarding Sealink’s position.

• Copied the following community leaders into the correspondence:

  • Minister for Tourism, Minister for Agriculture, Food & Fisheries,  Mr Leon Bignell

  • Mayor of Kangaroo Island, Mr Peter Clements

  • Commissioner for Kangaroo Island, Ms Wendy Campana

  • Minister for Finniss, Mr Michael Pengilly

  • Mr Andy Gilfillan
