UPDATE: Rebekha Sharkie - Busy as ever!

21 Apr 2017

Ms Rebekha Sharkie, Federal Member for Mayo

At the AGM last year, Rebekha let us know that she had communicated with the following ministers around issues of importance, as listed below:

Leon Bignell - State Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries

  • Raised the issue of freight costs and transport.

Stephen Mullighan – State Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Cost of Freight

Raised cost of freight to and from the island:

  • Received a much better response than the response from the Minister for Agriculture.

  • State Government is acutely aware of the cost of both freight and passenger travel to the island.

National Highway 1 – Has raised this issue with Premier as well.

  • A solution to ongoing costs is to lobby the Federal Government to include the route to Kangaroo Island as a part of the National Highway Network.

  • State Government is very supportive of us lobbying the Federal Minister for Transport – Darren Chester.

Jack Snelling – State Minister for Health

  • Raised concerns surrounding the reports that Kingscote Medical Centre no longer bulk bill pensioners.

Simon Birmingham – Federal Minister for Education and Training

  • Raised the option of increasing the rebate for Kangaroo Island students to attend excursions to Canberra. Tasmania currently receives an extra rebate for air and sea travel, and Rebekha is pushing for Kangaroo Island students to receive the same

Fiona Nash – Federal Minister for Regional Development

  • Raised the election promises made to the electorate, including $10,000 to the Kingscote Football Club. All election promises will be met.

In 2017, she has continued to meet with Ministers regarding issues of importance:

Kelly O’Dwyer, Federal Finance Minister

  • Discussions and presentation of petition to advocate for KI to be included in special tax offset zone.

Darren Chester, Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister

  • Various transport/infrastructure matters from across the electorate including

Zoe Bettison, State Minister for Youth, Communities and Social Inclusion

  • Various issues surrounding youth, housing, and homelessness.

Mitch Fifield, Federal Minister for Communications

  • NBN and telecommunication matters

Alan Tudge, Federal Minister for Human Services

  • Centrelink matters particularly debt letters

Tony Smith, Speaker of the House of Representatives

  • The Speaker visited KI in relation to matters of a civic nature

Once again, Ms Sharkie's office encourages anybody living in the electorate to communicate with her about issues of concern.
