There was a meeting recently of the KI Energy Focus Group along with SA Power Networks, followed by an open invitation for the community to attend.
SA Power Networks gave us an update on their preparation for providing energy security options to the Australian Energy Regulator who has endorsed $45m for the replacement of the undersea cable.
In effect, an undersea cable provides us with security but other options need to be sought and considered by them as part of SA Power Networks processes. We also gained an update from them about recent methodology changes that should see a reduction in providing electricity access to new and expanding developments depending upon accessibility to current or future infrastructure. SA Power Network will be confirming these arrangements in a fact sheet to us shortly so it can be circulated.
I am also pleased to advise that our KI Transformation Project is up and running with $20k provided via the Australian Government’s Industry Skills Fund along with a contribution by potential contractors to the KI Airport upgrade project. This is the first of the industry projects that we will be conducting with KI Industry & Brand Alliance to support local businesses gain the best chance of getting contracts and planning for their business growth as a result of the $171m of projects approved or planned for the Island over the next 3 - 5 years.
I am also keeping in close contact with the developers involved in other projects planned and proposed on the Island to ensure that they are supported as they work through government processes and upon approval are alerted to the opportunities to work with the local community. My conversations with developers have been around the Golf Course, American River Resort, Forestry Port proposals, Bickford, Council regarding the airport upgrade and with the State regarding the Walking Trail.
I look forward to continuing to work with businesses on the Island to address issues with government or to assist them to access services and support. I also welcome feedback on areas where we are not hitting the mark or where you think we can be doing more.
