Jamie Briggs MP, Federal member for Mayo and Minister for Cities and Built Environment together with Warren Truss, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure & Regional Development have announced that Kangaroo Island Council have been successful with their bid to Commonwealth National Stronger Regions Infrastructure Fund for $9M to match the $9M funding commitment of the South Australian State Government for the $18M Kangaroo Island Airport Upgrade Project.
Mayor Peter Clements said, "this is not just an $18 million injection into the Kangaroo Island economy, it is a transformative project that will create new jobs and unmatched business opportunities for the island and South Australia. With around $200M of projects in the pipeline, this announcement will further de-risk the planned capital spend from the private sector for the island and provide a stimulus for other development.
"Council will consider this announcement at their December Meeting on Tuesday 8th December and pending formal funding agreement details, there is strong support for this project to go ahead."
"The decision to upgrade the airport to accept larger planes is a strategic business move by Council to improve the economic value to the Community and the project has received full Council support. Council has worked hard by leveraging our relationship with federal and state governments and today a financially feasible, strikingly beautiful and appropriately sized airport facility is within our grasp."
CEO Andrew Boardman said, "many people have contributed to this project, not least KIFA, the Commissioner and the commitment of the State Government but also the Council, businesses and Community of Kangaroo Island and our job now is to deliver this project on time and on budget."
"Preparation work has been in hand since the submission in anticipation of a positive funding outcome - we have had significant interest in the Requests for Proposal for design elements for the Terminal works that have been open on the SA Tenders website for the last fortnight and the Airside Packages go out to the market this week."
"We continue to work with South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) and other key stakeholders on and off the island, and will shortly be commencing the airline service provider engagement work that will see a comprehensive prospectus put to the market to attract a suitable partner provider. This is a key piece of work and a partnership approach between airline service providers, Council and industry on the island will be essential so that there is a win-win-win for all."
Mayor Clements said, "we are so lucky to have a dynamic team of people in the Council Administration led by CEO, Mr Andrew Boardman and an Elected Member team who are switched on to the needs of the community. Despite the global doom and gloom, these are exciting times for Kangaroo Island and I am aware, there is much more work to be done to ensure our future sustainability and maintaining our unique lifestyle and freedom - this is a nice entry to the Christmas period and once back from our Christmas break, we will be fully committed to delivering this exciting project."
