This budget accommodation - central to tourism on the island - has changed hands and changed focus, with exciting opportunities ahead!

"We took every opportunity to explore the island and its attractions as quickly as possible after arriving, in order to be able to personally recommend other businesses to our guests"

Briefly tell us about your business

We moved to KI in late November 2016, having just bought KI Central Backpackers from the Bluchers. We had decided a few months earlier that we would like to move to Kangaroo Island and it was while we were house hunting that we stumbled on the fact that this place was for sale.

Hot on the heels of working (and surviving) our first summer, we closed our doors in order to undertake renovations, and reopened in late April. In addition to upgrading the kitchen and bedroom facilities, we changed the name of the accommodation and became a guesthouse.

A quirky fact: we chose the name “Dragonfly” because Susi has a daughter called Rori. You would need to be a fan of the TV show, The Gilmore Girls, to make the connection - the lead character, who has a daughter named Rory, owns an inn called The Dragonfly. Susi's daughter has lent her name to the cabin in the rear garden, which also underwent a facelift during the renovations.

We have quite a few plans for future development of the site (subject to Council approval) that will see the addition of a large undercover outdoor area, and a front porch, but for now we will catch our breath and work on finalising our website and increasing the number of guests who walk through our doors, particularly during the quieter months. We're also looking forward to developing the rear garden and planting it out with a herbs for guests to use in the kitchen.

Although we have renovated, we continue to refer to ourselves as budget accommodation, largely because the bathrooms remain as shared facilities. We still cater for backpackers, albeit in a smaller dormitory, as we decided to turn the largest room in the house into a spacious family room. This allows families to enjoy the benefit of budget-style accommodation and mixing with guests from all over the world, while having sufficient space in their private room to chill out privately, together.

How does or can your business contribute to the business community?

We are still finding our feet in our new community, but will always look for ways in which to contribute, in any way we can. We took every opportunity to explore the island and its attractions as quickly as possible after arriving, in order to be able to personally recommend other businesses to our guests - we still have a lot more to see and do. Susi worked at the KI Races, and we both became members of the Yacht Club (we always invite our guests to join us on Friday nights - they really enjoy the opportunity to indulge in a local experience).

If a group or individual would like to use our venue to host a small function we would be open to doing this (taking into consideration that we are an accommodation venue with guests, but if it is possible to work around this, particularly during the quieter seasons, we would certainly consider the possibility). We have been approached to host scholarship students for the Islands of the World Conference and will meet with the coordinator later this week to discuss the finer details.

We are currently hands on with the business, but would like to get to the point where we would hire staff, most likely a cleaner.

Why did you join Business Kangaroo Island and how do you see it helping your business?

We thought it would be useful way in which to network with other KI business operators, to share ideas to help overcome the challenges of living and operating a business on an island. It will also provide us with the opportunity to get to know more members of the community.

What are some positive opportunities you see for Kangaroo Island businesses in the future?

As an accommodation provider, the airport expansion and the possibility of another Glenelg to Kingscote ferry are of great interest to us. It is not just tourism service providers who will benefit from a growth in tourist numbers, and a boost to these transport services.

~ Susi Whitehead & Bruno Beltrame

More info: www.kidragonfly.com

[Apologies to Susi for the use of the wrong image on the BKI June Newsletter]

CLEAN ENERGY FORUM - AgriBusiness Workshop - 3pm, May 3, 2017

Please ensure your seat, RSVP asapRegister your interest www.rebekhasharkie.com.au/cleanenergyor phone 8398 5566

Please ensure your seat, RSVP asap

Register your interest www.rebekhasharkie.com.au/cleanenergy

or phone 8398 5566

WELCOME - Our new Executive Officer, Debbie Clarke

Debbie Clarke comes to the committee with professional expertise over a diverse employment history. In 1987, I started work for the late Myles Pearce at his Morphett Vale office. Myles was a hard-working, intelligent entrepreneur who believed that everyone in his employ should at least have their real estate sales qualification, regardless of whether they were admin staff, property management or sales.

This study whetted my appetite for real estate and further study. Back then, a real estate sales certificate required significant study which also included two law topics, which sadly real state personnel do not need to learn today.

In 1988, I was given a promotion to property manager and was relocated to Cairns, where I studied to obtain my Queensland qualification as well. A year later, I moved back to Adelaide and obtained my real estate agent qualification, giving me the freedom to have my own business.

Until 2004 I worked for various real estate franchises including 10 years with LJ Hooker Kensington. In 2004, I became a trainer at TAFE SA and at the Real Estate Institute of SA, and later at REISA became the only female Director of the Board. In 2004 I was the SA/NT Business Development Manager for a business called Rockend, which supplied and trained real estate software packages. That year I started my own real estate business called Home and Away Real Estate, which I still own and manage, which handles 20 strata managements, 110 residential property managements, and residential sales.

In 2013 I realised my life’s dream and bought a five acre waterfront allotment at Dover Farm, where I am about to start building my dream home thanks to my wonderful friend and builder Tony Gilbert from Kangaroo Island Quality Homes.

I was always intending to open a branch of Home and Away Real Estate on KI, but suddenly with a flash, I investigated whether anyone had registered the Business Name “Kangaroo Island Real Estate”. They hadn’t and the name became mine!

Kangaroo Island Real Estate was launched in March 2013 and has been growing steadily since. Both businesses have ‘virtual offices’ which is all that is required in the 21st century especially given that real estate transactions are generally on-site and any documentation and negotiations can be done via internet and telephone.

Eventually when Kangaroo Island Real Estate reaches its potential, Home and Away Real Estate will be sold, and I will not have to travel back and forth to monitor and work both businesses and therefore free my time to concentrate on my life and work on KI. It’s called living the dream!

What is new in your business worthy of news?

2017 is the 50th anniversary of the first time I set foot on KI, on 11th May 1967. To celebrate this Golden Anniversary,

I am offering potential clients three months of free property management and I am fixing the commission in advance for all sales.

Given the success of this offer to date, it could well continue into the future. The other noteworthy news is that a display cabinet for the Vivonne Bay General Store is being built and I also plan to have one in Penneshaw.

How does or can your business contribute to the business community (ie provide employment, function room, catering, hire equipment, support services etc)?

Given my two great loves in life (other than family, pets and friends) are real estate and Kangaroo Island, I am more than happy to meet people, travel to all areas and simply have a chat and give my advice on real estate issues.

I have already been asked to assist where people don’t want to sell right now, but need advice on what they could achieve in today’s market, only because they need this information for personal reasons. I am also a Justice of the Peace, so happy to help anyone who needs a JP at a minute’s notice.

Why did you join Business Kangaroo Island and how do you see it helping your business?

I have joined several committees since moving to live on KI in 2016.

The purpose was to meet people, offer to help others and hopefully receive some local assistance in matters as well.

Belonging to BKI assists me to grow my business as it provides a platform to become known to other local business owners and potential clients.

What are some positive opportunities you see for Kangaroo Island businesses in the future?

Given the new airport, the promotion of the new Wilderness Trail, the upcoming report at American River Resort, the new golf course at Pelican Lagoon, and the deep-sea port (where ever it is built), Kangaroo Island has never seen so many developments either under construction or in consideration at the same time. The flow-on effect must initially bring more tourist traffic, which means more money spent on KI, which will encourage brand new businesses to start up here plus with more income, existing businesses will be able to grow and expand.

When more tourists visit us, many will want to invest here or move here to live, which in turn will mean demand for rental properties will go up and also the value of real estate will improve. The influx of workers will also drive the demand for rental properties.

In summary, word is already out and real estate enquiries are coming through thick and fast from Sydney and Melbourne investors and many people from NT are buying here so that they can experience a true sea change. Real estate prices are not really on the rise yet, but the properties are selling much quicker than even just two to three years ago. Kangaroo Island is set to soar and it is exciting to be on the wave of evolution for this magnificent but, until recently, forgotten paradise.

~ Lynne Savage

UPDATE: Rebekha Sharkie - Busy as ever!

Ms Rebekha Sharkie, Federal Member for MayoAt the AGM last year, Rebekha let us know that she had communicated with the following ministers around issues of importance, as listed below:Leon Bignell - State Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Raised the issue of freight costs and transport. BMD (airside contractors) will then have full possession of the runway, extension areas, taxiway A and the eastern half of the apron to carry out lengthening, strengthening works, lighting upgrades and other associated requirements.

To assist with this and to ensure that air services are not impacted, check in and baggage reclaim services for REX will move from their current position in the terminal to the opposite side (old Air South check-in area). The REX ground handling team will maintain their existing offices but operate out of this side of the terminal until the new terminal is completed. Access to the eastern car/bus park through the end doors will remain in place until the Terminal Contractor takes possession of the site and then access will be stopped.

Operations will continue exactly as they are now with no impact to frequency of services throughout the works period anticipated to be required.

The terminal tender is open and the short-listed contractors are in the process of compiling their bids. The tender closes at the end of February and evaluation will commence immediately thereafter. It is hoped that the evaluation, identification of preferred contractor and contract negotiation will be completed during March with site possession by March 31st. It is anticipated, at this stage, that construction could be complete by the end of December 2017 (although this will be weather-dependent until lock-up stage is reached).

Airline service negotiations continue aiming for a start date for a new service(s) of December 1 2017. It is anticipated that we will be in a position to confirm this in the coming three months all being well.

There will be the potential for ancillary opportunities over and above construction at the airport in respect of terminal and supporting infrastructure services and these will be managed through public advertisement in Council Matters as an when Council are ready to seek expressions of interest.

Should any members have questions around specific elements of the project then please contact the CEO, Andy Boardman on kicouncil@kicouncil.sa.gov.au or 08 8553 4506.

The Kangaroo Island Council website also offers all current information about how this will unfold.

The council is attempting to answer as many queries as possible in a Frequently Asked Questions document, available here.

UPCOMING: Free TAFE SA courses March - April, 2017

TAFE will be offering some IT courses on Kangaroo Island in March and April, 2017:• Computing Essentials - 16-19 March• IT Support - 30 March - 1 April• Using Digital Devices - 27-29 AprilAll of these courses are free of charge. In addition, there are courses including Dairy, Quad Bike and Chem Card being offered in Meningie, Victor Harbour and Murray Bridge. Thank you for taking the time from your busy schedules to attend your AGM.

Business Kangaroo Island exists only for its members – without your support, enthusiasm, and desire to succeed as business owners we would not exist.

I think it is worth thinking briefly why BKI formed in the first instance; essentially from a flow on of the positive wave or movement that came about with the support of KI Futures Authority. As businesses, we always had the optimism necessary to ‘make it’, but with the support of KIFA and now the Commissioner for KI, we are starting to see some of the ‘talked about’ projects coming to fruition and there are some exciting opportunities and times ahead.

BKI formed to ensure that the positive voice of the business community was always heard – we were concerned at the time that rumours and misinformation lead to discontent and lack of confidence. So, keeping our members informed is one of our top priorities and we have done this in the past 12 months through the introduction of the e-Newsletter, posts on BKI’s Facebook group page and the opportunity to network through the Business SA regional connect event.

Our membership currently sits at around 100, we hope that this will continue to grow as Business Kangaroo Island continues to develop; expanding on what we do – which could be summarised by providing business news, business views and business benefits. The Committee has continued to work very hard building relationships with our local council and state and federal government, developers and other stakeholders.

The aim of Business Kangaroo Island is to further the economic development and prosperity of Kangaroo Island businesses – we will continue to be a positive advocate for the future direction and opportunities on Kangaroo Island. We have committee members sitting on the KIIBA board; KI Council and the Commissioner for KI’s Energy Security Focus Group and the Economic Advisory Board.

Committee members have participated in a wide range of events and meetings that affect businesses on KI – we have endeavoured to bring you updates to these (recognising that all business owners can’t get to all events – but that doesn’t mean that they are not interested – just time-poor); these have been featured in our e-Newsletter and are on our website.

This year we have met with the Minister for Regions, Mr Geoff Brock with discussions around access to grants and funding; our new Federal Member for Mayo, Ms Rebekha Sharkie – and we are very pleased to have Rebekha here with us tonight to provide us with an update on Mayo and how we are faring at the Federal level as well as discuss some of the poignant KI opportunities and challenges.

We are very proud of the relationship we are forging with Business SA’s ‘regional partnership’ and the 50% discount on Business SA membership for BKI members.

In April, Business KI members participated in the Business SA regional pulse survey – from which KI had a great response rate and helped to produce Business SA’s ‘Regional Voice 2016 – Understanding Regional SA Businesses’ – check out pg 13 (please take a copy home with you tonight so you can take the time to have a look at a snapshot from around the state – how other country areas are faring and what their concerns are). Members also attended a round-table event with the CEO of Business SA, Mr Nigel McBride, which was held at the Ozone, ‘Putting Island Businesses on the Agenda’ – a great evening, a bit of fun, a few drinks and some serious discussions and information sharing about issues affecting businesses on KI and across the state.

We brought to you; breaking news – of the Kangaroo Island Airport Upgrade funding and KI Plantation Timbers land purchase; Listened to SARDI research scientist Dr Simon Goldsworthy presenting his findings on the LNFS including population trends, public perception and interactions with fisheries and shared these findings with our members in the May e-News.

We have reported on activities that our members have participated in; events both on and off-island which are supporting them to develop and grow their businesses notably the ‘Open all Year’ project and ‘Tasting Australia’. Many members are now also involved in the Commissioner's ‘Transformation project’ with some opportunities still available to participate for those businesses in the retail and service sectors.

Business KI have used our e-News to promoting business tools and workshops that have been held by TAFE (Xero/minimising income tax). We have attended the Understanding China Workshops, which were presented by SATC in conjunction with TKI – a real eye opener and some excellent resources available on our website from this event.

In the future, we are looking at ways that we can collaborate with off-island businesses and organisations – with the vision to help grow and develop our organisation and our local businesses as well as encourage and broaden our Associate membership base (off-island businesses can only be Associate members).

I would like to thank our featured sponsors:

• KI Accounting Services whom kindly provide our Auditing services;

• Little Birdy Web & Design – a big thank you to Simone who provides exceptional support for our website and e-News; and

• Acacia Apartments – for the use of their wonderful venue on several occasions.

Notably, this year we have responded to our members ‘joining’ feedback/survey in which overwhelmingly our members continue to highlight the problems associated with the cost of access to the island; to this end we have formed a Position Statement and an Action Plan regarding Access to KI, which states:

• That there be transparency throughout the contract negotiations regarding the provision of ferry services to and from Kangaroo Island.

• Business Kangaroo Island would like to see an independent economic impact statement (EIS) commissioned and reported, highlighting the social and economic implications (short and long term) of the existing and future contractual arrangements.

• We expect that the contract negotiations should be based on strong benchmark data, and adoption of best commercial practices as demonstrated for other ferry services around the world.

• An open competitive tender process for the service should be undertaken, for a nominated contract period of 7-10 years and that competitive rates and conditions be negotiated to ensure that access for all stakeholders (businesses/residents/tourists) is fair and equitable.

Initial Plan of Action:

• Request a meeting with DPTI and the CKI to understand the negotiation process/time frames, consideration and next steps.

• Request a copy of the KIFA-commissioned Transport Services Report by Parsons Brinckerhoff, from DPTI via the Commissioner for KI to inform BKI’s requests.

We have recently had a reply from Minister Mullighan regarding our position statement; he is not willing to provide the requested report at this stage; however the Commissioner for KI, Ms Wendy Campana, is helping us to connect and hopefully have some access to this document – we would really like to understand the aims of the report and see a summary of the findings as well as the recommendations coming out of the report and we will continue to push for this and to have some level of assurance that contract negotiations are fair and equitable for KI businesses.

Finally, I would like to thank the Committee members and especially those who are out going and of course all of our members, because without our members this organisation wouldn’t exist – please remember the strength of BKI is ‘power with numbers’ so thank you for your continued support and all the best in business in the coming year.

Sharon Kauppila

Chairperson

Rebekha Sharkie addresses BKI AGM with news of positive steps forward.

Rebekha Sharkie addressed the AGM with a detailed report of who she has met to advocate on behalf of her electorate - a long list of State and Federal Ministers and other MPs, primarily to ensure that all promises made in the Federal election campaign were honoured in Mayo.

She found some of her contacts extremely receptive, and others less tuned in to her queries, but she has kept Kangaroo Island in the spotlight in her endeavours.

Ms Sharkie identified the three key pressing issues for Kangaroo Island as:

freight and ferry costs;health services; andcost of business and the desire to grow markets.

Ms Sharkie has had talks about freight and ferry costs, lobbying for subsidies and a governmental rethink of transport to and from the island.

She made the commitment to talk about Kangaroo Island as often as she could and to be on the island at least once every six weeks.

Ms Sharkie was asked questions about the backpacker tax issue, tourist visa processing, and the YESS program to reduce energy costs.

Ms Sharkie said she would return to the island to speak about the PATH employment program, and she planned to hold grant writing forums.

After the meeting, Ms Sharkie and her assistants spoke to many of those who attended the meeting, noting down issues of concern and viewpoints held. She requested that we keep her updated with concerns via email at: Rebekha.Sharkie.MP@aph.gov.au

FEATURED BUSINESS - Big Quince Print

This month's featured business is Big Quince Print, which now incorporates Duck Duck Goose Print Design Signs. Stuart Dawes and Alice Teasdale have recently bought Duck Duck Goose and added it to their existing business in order to create a branding and signage "hub", which produces signs, banners, garments, car decals, brochures, business cards, and other promotional items and signage. Most items are printed here on the island. They are working hard, like us all, to be competitive in spite of freight costs. They are also steadily expanding the scope of the business by researching new print media and processes. It's an adventure worth reading about!

"We help sell the KI brand by helping tourist and export businesses to market professionally, and we also keep things ticking for island businesses. We are on display to tourists in park signage and at historic sites such as Reeves Point. It's important this all looks as good as possible for as long as possible."

Briefly tell us about your business

Big Quince Print began out of hardship in 2007, when Stuart lost his job a week after our second child was born. Over the next few months of struggling to find work in Adelaide's inner north, we developed an idea for a business in innovative t-shirt printing, jumping in on the new digital printing technology which enabled full colour designs to be printed directly onto garments and fabric.

In Adelaide, we did unusual and varied jobs for everybody from Simon Bryant (The Cook & the Chef) to Mark Thompson (writer of Blokes & Sheds and ABC TV series The Lost Tools of Henry Hoke). We printed handkerchiefs, silk for bespoke garments, and thousands of t-shirts.

Unfortunately, the digital technology repeatedly let us down with financially crippling printer breakdowns, but we always seemed to have a body of loyal customers and a constant flow of enquiries.

The evolution since then has been monumental. In 2012, we moved to join family on Kangaroo Island, bringing technology and stock with us. We resurrected the business here on a smaller scale, with a view to serving the tourist market.

In 2016 after our main digital t-shirt printer finally and catastrophically turned up its toes, we decided to move across to sign writing and fill the gap left by Tiffany Bell after the birth of the gorgeous Archie. Tiffany sold us her business, Duck Duck Goose Print Design Signs, and the wonderful goodwill and portfolio she had built up over several years since she bought it from Luke Conaghty, who had also served the island well. A hard act to follow!

We had recently moved the old art room from Kingscote campus to our farm, and this provided a perfect workshop for both businesses to work side by side. The business has grown very rapidly since then, with large sign and banner orders from Parks and a range of island businesses.

The equipment we have includes a wide-format printer and a plotter cutter, so we are able to create all manner of signs here on the island. We outsource small paper print jobs to Darry at KI Paperworks, and large jobs (e.g. 250+ business cards) to trade printers so that we can offer rock bottom prices for quality work.

We also design logos, brochures, business cards etc. While not trained graphic designers, both Stuart and I have been drawing and designing for most of our careers. If we know we're out of our depth we have some very artistic and accomplished local designers we can call on.

We also have a 6-station screen printing carousel. Going backwards technologically turned out to be the best bet! In addition, we can use the big sign printer to offer some very high quality digital options for garments. We can supply garments from most of Australia's blank garment suppliers, and can also supply workwear.

What is new in your business worthy of news?

We have decided to bring Duck Duck Goose Print Design Signs under the umbrella of our previous business name, Big Quince Print, for smoothness of operations - even though people are so familiar with Tiffany's brand! People will be able to find us either way still, but both are under one roof and operating as one business.

We have been busy investigating equipment and supplies which will widen the options for customers. For example, we now stock vinyls for every circumstance - short term for a tight budget, through to premium cast vinyl for where ultra-longevity is needed.

Our latest fad is car wraps. We're about to put an all-over colourful print on our own car (we'll make our first-time stuff-ups at home!) and have a customer car booked in straight after that.

How does or can your business contribute to the business community (ie provide employment, function room, catering, hire equipment, support services etc)?

A lot of work is being done at the moment to sell the Kangaroo Island "brand" to the rest of the world, and we as islanders should be proud of that. World class coffee, wine, beer, cheese, meat, produce, art, architecture and more is being recognised widely, with its unique and refreshing origins as part of the mystique. Tourists are having experiences they'll never forget.

There are also the everyday businesses and organisations serving islanders - refrigeration, flooring, curtains, plumbing, electrical, groceries, employment, education and so forth.

We serve both cohorts. We help sell the KI brand by helping tourist and export businesses to market professionally, and we also keep things ticking for island businesses. We are on display to tourists in park signage and at historic sites such as Reeves Point. It's important this all looks as good as possible for as long as possible.

At the moment, we're trying hard to make our prices as competitive as we can so that businesses already disadvantaged by freight costs don't have to struggle to pay for necessary signage. In most cases, we can offer a product at the same price it'd be if shipped from a printer in town (i.e. we try to match shipped prices). It's not viable for us to ignore our freight costs, but we do try to buy stock in bulk to get free, or at least combined shipping. We also work from home to keep overheads down.

Why did you join Business Kangaroo Island and how do you see it helping your business?

Networking is a key part of growing a business. More of our jobs come from personal connections and word-of-mouth than anywhere else. Innovation is driven by connections like this.

I attended some BKI events and not only learned a lot from visiting speakers, but felt welcome among people all trying to build strong businesses in the local area. I made important connections which stand to benefit Stu and I in our ability to serve island businesses with professionalism.

Joining BKI in the light of this was a no-brainer! I even put my hand up to be on the Committee, in the hope that I can learn more about how the island's business community ticks.

It's also essential to stay in touch with development on the island, with the airport and other developments providing opportunities for businesses like mine to provide products and services. BKI provides a way to be "in the loop" and to make sure we're in the right place at the right time!

What are some positive opportunities you see for Kangaroo Island businesses in the future?

I feel as if there's a buzz of development at the moment, which should result in some sort of growth, whether it be visitor numbers or residents. The airport development is visibly on the move. The Wilderness Trail is open and gaining national recognition. We have a Commissioner and a Brand. We also have representative bodies like BKI and a refreshingly active Federal Member!

I still believe the biggest obstacle for everything on KI is that a trip here costs about the same as a flight to Bali. The trickle-down effects are felt in every part of our lives - petrol costs more. Groceries cost more. Businesses must pass crippling freight costs on to customers. Travel for health care can be an ordeal. People stuck in welfare dependency are even more stuck because their payments just don't allow for these extra costs.

I know that Rebekha Sharkie is lobbying hard. We need to stand behind her and keep informed, putting pressure where we can. If so much money was not going into getting everybody and everything across that little passage of water, there would be more dollars flowing around for us all to enjoy!

~ Alice & Stuart

ATTENTION! These elements were not business-plan critical and the Council believes it can achieve similar outcomes for some of the elements (obviously not the ferry operation) working with the Developers once their land-side development consent is granted and is underway.

Given 99% of their issues were associated with this they are now in the position of being able to submit their documents to the Department of Planning for assessment and public consultation. We are expecting this 15-day period to start imminently. They will then respond to any questions raised and supply these to the Department. The Department will draft its response, incorporate the questions raised and Developer responses and provide a consolidated report and recommendation to the Minister. It then goes to Cabinet, which refers it to the Governor for announcement. All things being equal a decision could be forthcoming just before Christmas of late January-early February after Cabinet breaks for Christmas.

Bickfords Proposal

An assessment report has been drafted by Crown Lands and is about to go to the Unsolicited Bid Assessment Panel – from there it goes to the Minister and then Cabinet for approval. No show-stoppers raised and the incorporation of encumbrances to provide equivalency of local heritage listing is accepted as a reasonable option. An announcement is possible in November depending on how long it takes to go through Cabinet.

Kingscote Wharf Proposal

Expressions of Interest are being assessed at the moment and a report will be generated for the Minister. Depending on the level of interest then next steps to follow may be visible in the next month or so.

Golf Course

The course at Pennington Bay is now marked out with tees, turn-points and greens. More detailed design is in hand and discussions with SA Water continue about the best option for supply that incorporates supply to American River resort as well. As soon as water solution is confirmed then they can start the process of tendering.

SA Water

As a result of Commissioner Wendy Campana and I meeting with SA Water and the Developers for the American River resort and Pennington Bay golf course - and with details supplied of the additional developments in Kingscote and Emu Bay etc – SA Water has undertaken to remodel its total water model to see if there is a need to bring forward the proposed water storage facility in the Kingscote area. The Commissioner and I are awaiting a return briefing from them when this work is completed. This model does take into account future water options such as dam, desalination and increased storage.

~ Andrew Boardman

CEO, KI Council

ADVANCED KINGSCOTE PROGRESS ASSOCIATION - KI Visitors Guide 2017-19

The new issue of the Kingscote Visitor Guide is planned for release in January 2017. They were:

Issues associated with sea passage access - cost of freight, capacity for businesses to be competitive due to costs associated with sea passage access.Tax Zones – can KI have a concessional tax rate as an isolated area?Issues with banks reluctant to lend for property on KI.Roads - SA has 11% of nation’s roads; 7% of nation’s population; receives only 5% of federal road spend.Infrastructure - particularly mains water supply and undersea electricity cable.

Ms Sharkie said she was keen to follow up on these issues and assist where possible.

Meeting with the Federal Member for Mayo – Ms Rebekha Sharkie

The committee of Business Kangaroo Island met with Ms Sharkie on Thursday 28th August to welcome her into her newly appointed role as the Member for Mayo and begin to discuss some of the complex issues which businesses face on KI.

From our member survey conducted last year (on the membership forms) we know that the number one issue affecting businesses is the cost of access. What we were able to point out to Ms Sharkie was that it is not just as simple as the cost of getting freight to the Island, but the cost of getting produce off the Island and the high cost of travel to and from the Island for tourists and locals alike. All of these factors together compound the issue

This issue is always contentious and is not a quick fix – but at least with better understanding and a renewed push we can keep it on the ‘burner’ and it can form a part of the conversations which Ms Sharkie will have with respect to the electorate of Mayo and the amount of spending on road networks within the state compared with other states.

We discussed future road funding; we all know that quality infrastructure is the backbone of strong economies and business investment. Kangaroo Island is no different – except that it struggles to maintain (let alone improve) its road network. Ms Sharkie advised that federal road funding is very much on her agenda as SA has 11% of nations roads; 7% of nations population and yet receives only 5% of federal road spend. Business KI is advocating for further funding from the Federal government for the road networks.

Ms Sharkie was able to confirm that pre-election promises made by the Turnbull government with regards to Black Spot Road funding will be kept. The same was said for the ‘promised’ mobile phone towers at Stokes Bay and Gosse. So it is really pleasing to hear that these projects will proceed.

Kangaroo Islands average wages are well below that of the national average and our cost of living are higher (Zone tax allowance for residents). The federal government has the ability to look into tax concessions for disadvantaged and isolated communities. Although not huge these possible tax allowances could provide some relief to low income earners.

Water and Energy infrastructure was also touched upon; it is important to encourage these private companies (SA Water/SAPN) into reviewing their infrastructure plans in light of upcoming developments; KI needs to be pro-active in planning for development not reactive and therefore in a position where (considered) development is unable to proceed i.e. water infrastructure for Golf Course/American river resort; but also the township of American river and the businesses along the ‘new pipeline’ route. The Emu Bay development – an additional 79 blocks of land to be developed – township could do with water in the future. SA Water need to look at ways of guaranteeing water availability into the future for KI and its developing markets (tourism/forestry/agribusiness & population growth).

Finally, we touched on the point of businesses on KI being unable to access the equity capital in their properties to fund business development and growth. Banks are obviously very risk adverse, but that problem is exacerbated on KI due to the poor property market and lower land values. Ms Sharkie suggested that she and we would look at taking this issue to the banking ombudsman.

MEN'S SHED: Kingscote’s own man cave

Soon Kingscote will have its own Men’s Shed for the men of Kangaroo Island.A steering committee has found suitable premises and has affiliated with the Australian Men’s Shed Association. It was Christmas time, so the day after we opened, we were full to capacity, with much to learn. There is still always much to learn, but really enjoyable, and with more opportunities to grow as a business and as a business owner.

Acacia Apartments is the kind of place where families come, often for several days and it has been one of my greatest joys to get to know some of these families, as they sometimes return each year or two.

The apartments are all self-contained, and I love it when people say that to come is like finding a home away from home. That is how I envisioned Acacia before deciding to build. There are 10 apartments and one of them has been built specially for disability support. That has been appreciated by lots of people over the years. It is wheelchair friendly and also suitable for guests with allergies. I am glad we had help at the building stage to provide this facility.

What is new in your business?

We are always thinking of new ways to enhance holidays and to meet expectations, so adding NBN has been good, especially as everyone seems to bring a device or two with them. I visited one apartment to find four young people talking to each other, on their phones!

We have some little fire pits so people can cook a barbecue, sit around the fire pits and chat, or burn marshmallows! I like to think that things like this, and the swimming pool, are the kind of things that enhance the trip to KI, and make memories.

We have a conference and function room which is often used for local meetings, and sometimes for parties or wedding celebrations. I especially enjoyed having a few couples marry in the gardens then celebrate here afterwards.

How does or can your business contribute to the business community? (ie provide employment, function room, catering, hire equipment, support services etc)

Any business that employs local people is supporting our community and we like to support in other ways as well, sometimes providing accommodation or meeting space for people as they seek to assist our community.

Why did you join Business Kangaroo Island and how do you see it helping your business?

Business Kangaroo Island gathers us all together to share expertise, skills and dilemmas, and to build a common vision for Kangaroo Island enterprise. I appreciate these opportunities and encourage others to join as well. Educational speakers, shared ideas and branding exercises will all help us to grow in business on KI.

What are some positive opportunities you see for Kangaroo Island businesses in the future?

On Kangaroo Island we look forward to new opportunities, greater visitation, and greater financial benefit. Looking forward now to see how we can all participate, and support each other, will be vital. There may be co-operative marketing and advertising, and research benefits as we continue to find markets that are looking for just what we have to offer on KI: amazing nature experiences, beautiful coastlines, and friendly locals!

Many thanks to Acacia Aparmtents for being our Featured Sponsor.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR MAYO: We need YOU!

The Committee of Business Kangaroo Island will be meeting with our new Federal Member for Mayo Ms Rebekha Sharkie on Thursday 28th July. One of these options would have resulted in the pavement upgrade being carried out at night with the runway open during the day such that there were no disruptions to services.

Geotechnical investigations have now demonstrated that the existing pavement does not have the inherent strength to support this approach and therefore we will need to

proceed with a conventional build-up of the runway, taxiway and apron with a layer of crushed stone which is then sealed. While extensions to the north-south runway will be managed without disruption the middle section will require aircraft operations to cease whilst the works are completed.

During this time, possibly 6-8 weeks, an alternate unsealed runway at the airport,
Runway Heading 15/33, is available for use. This runway is frequently used by RAAF

Hercules aircraft and many other users.”

Criticism that regional airline REX has been ignored in the planned upgrade are also

untrue. Discussions with REX Operationsstaff commenced with a request for
information on their ability/willingness to land on an unsealed pavement in early December 2015. This query was only answered at the end of March 2016.

Their answer is as follows:

Whilst SAAB 340 operations on unpaved runways are possible, there is a need to increase the inspections on the aircraft due to the high risk of aircraft damage during take-off or landing.

Operations on unpaved taxiways are again possible but the aircraft must be placed onto a sealed area for start-up to avoid stone damage. Through experience there is a very high likelihood that some aircraft stone damage will occur for regular operations on unpaved runways and on that basis the Company will not permit operations on unpaved runways or taxiways until we have a detailed understanding of the type of unsealed surface being proposed and the maintenance conditions associated with the surface i.e.: sweeping, rolling, etc. Should the unpaved surface be subjected to rain it may render it unsuitable for us to operate on.

In addition the airport owner would need to agree to cover the cost of any associated damage caused by operations on an unpaved surface.

It is clear that unpaved runway operations are possible and quite common in Australia for commercial use. Quite understandably, REX would need to satisfy themselves that the standard of unsealed runway is suitable for their aircraft as would any other airline contemplating use of such a runway.

Council is also looking into the opportunity of extending the second unpaved runway by up to 136m in total which will provide a total of 1300m – the equivalent of REX-advised
Take of Distance Available (TODA) for their aircraft.

They are also looking to technically assess and confirm the operating strength of the runway – the pavement classification – as this is also a contributory factor in runway suitability.

These works are in hand as we write. Appropriately Council is assessing other options available to the Community should REX be unable, or unwilling to, operate on this runway. These options will need to maintain the expected daily schedule with alternate airlines and/or aircraft types.

Once all the facts are available Council will be able to engage with REX and offer a range of potential solutions to this issue for their consideration.

Council, in conjunction with the South

Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), Adelaide Airport Limited (AAL) and with

specialist Aviation Consultancy, Ailevon Pacific Aviation Consulting (APAC), are in
discussions with other airlines with the intent of seeking additional services to the east coast capital cities.

A service package may also include alternative services to Adelaide as well. It is possible that an alternative airline service provider may be technically capable and willing to operate local Adelaide to Kangaroo Island services off an unpaved runway during the period of disruption and therefore be able to provide the requisite service level for our Community and visitors.

Council are hopeful that these matters will all be able to be brought to a decision point in the coming two months – we note that we are still potentially 7+ months from any possible changes impacting on the airlines able to support our services during construction.

Our Community and any visitors contemplating travel at this time should book with confidence that there will be a suitable service operating throughout the upgrade period.

Council will continue to pursue the project systematically and effectively to ensure that we deliver fit for purpose infrastructure with minimal disruption to the Community and our visitors.

When further facts are available, Council will publish them and until this time we ask that any queries or concerns be directly to the Council CEO so that we can ensure up to date information is provided.

Mayor Clements adds, “Much is being suggested by critics of the airport project of poor good, regular service for our Community. REX chose to take a public position in September 2015 of being very critical of the proposed airport upgrade which, whilst disappointing, is to be expected given that it will enable competition directly with their services which they have had a monopoly over providing since October 2009.”

Council’s CEO wrote to REX in March 2016 advising them of progress with the Upgrade proposal, acknowledging that there may be disruption and that we were investigating options with the aim “.......to partner with you to minimise cost/time/service issues during construction for either party”.

The letter went on to explore the opportunities facing the island with the Airport Upgrade and the announcements of large
developments such as the Golf Course and American River Resort Project and looked to
encourage them “.....to engage with you/your team to explore how this investment can be leveraged to reverse the trend of declining air passenger numbers in the face of ever-increasing visitation to the Island.”.

We have not at this time received any
acknowledgment of this invitation, however it is our intention to initiate further contact
when design decisions are providing further guidance on options and implications.”

Mayor Clements concludes, “It is our hope that REX will continue with their excellent service to the Island working in conjunction and competition with other airlines to open up our Island to the many domestic and international visitors we know want to come and enjoy all we have to offer.”

For further information on this press release, please contact Mayor Peter Clements or
CEO Andrew Boardman on 08 8553 4500 or kicouncil@kicouncil.sa.gov.au

CUT THE RED TAPE: Have Your Say!

The Simpler Regulation Unit works to ensure South Australia has a competitive business climate. Business Kangaroo Island deputy chair Rodney Bell (pictured) attended a recent Business SA regional forum and said this was one of the revelations of the day.

"Business SA has 4000 members. They admit they might have been focusing too much on metropolitan issues and they've been making a concerted effort to do more for their regional members," Mr Bell said.

Business KI recently hosted a forum at the Ozone Hotel with Business SA Chief Executive Officer Nigel McBride at which about 15 Kangaroo Island businesses were able to access information about growth and the advantages of being members of both organisations.

One of the benefits of joining Business Kangaroo Island is that it enables you to then get half-price membership of Business SA and access to a wide range of their services, including advice on staff issues, such as awards, penalty rates and work safety through their business hotline.

Mr Bell said at the regional forum there were representatives from chambers of commerce in Loxton, the Riverland, Mt Gambier, Whyalla, Port Lincoln and others. Many were paying hundreds of dollars to be members of their chambers. Annual membership of Business KI is just $50 and more than 100 businesses have now joined.

"The issues raised at the forum were similar across all the regions - red tape, infrastructure, penalty rates and payroll taxes. Sometimes I think we forget how well serviced we are here in Kangaroo Island with our health services, hotels in each town and school campuses in the main towns.

"The other regions certainly feel we are lucky with our extra $2 million a year for roads and the $18 million committed from State and Federal Government for the airport upgrade."

Mr Bell said it was a great opportunity to form contacts with the other regions. He said Business SA was implementing a program to get to know its members better so that businesses were not just a faceless name on a list.

Guest speaker and former Crows footballer Nigel Smart spoke about bringing people together to achieve great things.

"I think there is a message for Kangaroo Island in terms of collaboration. We need to get our heads together to see if we really need all the industry bodies we have on the island or if we can do things more efficiently. The Chief Executive Officer of the Kangaroo Island Council – Andrew Boardman – has supplied this exclusive update for Business Kangaroo Island members.

In 2015, the Council was successful in putting together a State Government supported bid, worth a combined $18 million, to the Commonwealth Regional Infrastructure Fund - National Stronger Regions. The award was announced by the Commonwealth in December and, with the funding agreement in place by late February, we have been able to proceed with the design phase of the project. Work continues with the State via the Department of Planning, Transport & Infrastructure (DPTI) to progress through the State Government funding processes in order to secure a formal funding agreement for its 50 per cent contribution. This is likely to be completed in late May or early June.

The tenders for design were put to market and generated enormous interest. The Consultants - all South Australian companies - engaged are:

Package A– Airside: Tonkin Consulting and Aerodrome Design.

Package B – Terminal: Ashley Halliday & Assoc – Architectural Services; Wallbridge & Gilbert – Civil Engineering; Bestec – Combined Services.

Project Services: RCP – Project Managers; Cundall – Environmentally Sensitive Design; RLB – Quantity Surveying / Cost Management.

The project is in design now with a clear brief to the Team to optimise use of local and South Australian materials and skill sets, to ensure that the Island and the State benefit as much as possible from the investment. We hosted the first commercial-user stakeholder meeting with the architects in late April and this has allowed further fine-tuning of the design.

We will have our first value management meeting in mid-May with a view to proceeding to final design and documentation between then and the end of June. The procurement strategy will be responsive to design and we expect to confirm this over the course of the next six weeks. We expect to go to market for construction in July, with evaluation and award in August and an expected construction start in mid-late September. It is anticipated that airside work will be completed by end of May 2017 and Terminal completion by August 2017.

With the upgrade clearly aimed at establishing east coast direct services to Melbourne and Sydney, the Council needs to be able to deliver a fit-for-purpose facility capable of handling the simultaneous arrival and departure of 100-seat regional jets together with 35-seat regional turbo-prop aircraft and the associated security needs of the larger interstate aircraft. It is also important that the Airport is an entrance statement for the Island; first impressions count and it is essential that the Airport and its operation are aligned to the environment they serve.

The Council has been working closely with the Commissioner for Kangaroo Island, Wendy Campana, to ensure that as many local businesses as possible – both in construction and services – are airport ready and it is pleasing to see the number of business that have come forward to work with the Commissioner to improve their competitiveness in the open market procurement processes that a project like this will demand.

The $18 million Airport Project does not require Council funding other than a minor purchase of 7.8 ha of additional land to the southern end of the runway. Works carried out to date were funded through financial assistance from the Kangaroo Island Futures Authority and there will be no impact on the 2016-17 draft budget. The Council, working with its auditor, Deloitte, has been able to establish an appropriate means of grant recognition across the life of the asset which minimises the impact of the depreciation provisions associated with the investment and will ensure that the airport will be cash-flow positive from day one.

Discussions with airlines have started with the Council, specialist Aviation Consultants and SA Tourism Commission working collaboratively to build and deliver a pitch to the airlines. Meetings to date have been productive. It is anticipated the process of negotiation will take three to six months to complete and we would hope that we will be able to have a clear nine-month minimum from commitment to date of first new service, in order to be able to start building interest and sales. The Council and the Commissioner will also work with Island Producers to support them to start market development activities for their high-value, short-shelf-life Island produce that can be air-freighted into east coast markets and international gateways.

This is an exciting project and one that is a game-changer for the Island – addressing one of the access paradigms that challenge the Community and those time-poor visitors who are simply not coming to the Island at this time. The market research carried out by the Council as part of the business case clearly demonstrates the untapped potential of the domestic market; the ability to effectively participate in the boom in visitation to Australia from the new markets in Asia and India and also the ability to better serve our traditional Northern European and US markets. Extremely encouraging comment from international travel wholesalers leads us to expect that response to direct flights could be even stronger than predicted.

FEATURED SPONSOR MAY 2016: Little Birdy Web & Design

This month, Simone Yvette Halloran of Little Birdy Web & Design, a Kangaroo Island born business, shares her thoughts with us. Simone has created our website, some of our printed materials and our monthly eNewsletter.

Tell us about Little Birdy Web & Design

Little Birdy Web & Design was born out of a need on Kangaroo Island for a local website designer. In the years that I worked in creating adverts for The Islander newspaper, I had many local business owners approach me and asked if I created websites independently. They were small business owners looking to get their online presence started.

At first, I began very small. I just did a website here and there, mostly just to help business owners for whom I was already creating adverts.

At the end of 2013, I moved to Victor Harbor and started Little Birdy Web & Design. I have remained very close to Kangaroo Island, as it will always be in my heart, and I still get the majority of my work from island businesses.

What is new in your business worthy of news?

In the past few years of operating Little Birdy Web & Design, I have had to evolve what the business offers to fully cater for my clients’ needs.

At first, I was purely doing website design with the occasional matching business card, logo, flyer, and Facebook cover image being the normal brief. However, I have learned that building a website for a business is not enough to help a business succeed in such a competitive arena, and that has become my main focus with Little Birdy.

Websites are only one tool in a great array of necessary tools to make a business succeed, and I wasn’t happy only offering my clients this and sending them on their way to discover the rest.

So, Little Birdy has recently adapted and I offer website design, business branding and online and print marketing design (as per usual), plus real marketing strategies to convert website traffic into actual paying customers/clients.

This is an exciting time for me and in the near future, I hope to expand to employing a few staff who will specialise in these different areas, and host workshops and networking events.

How does or can your business contribute to the business community? (ie provide employment, function room, catering, hire equipment, support services etc)

I believe that offering local Kangaroo Island businesses a real online presence with a great-looking and well-functioning website, good social media presence, and great marketing materials and strategies is a win-win for local businesses to stay strong and keep growing.

While not officially listed, Little Birdy is very much a part of the Kangaroo Island Art Feast committee as well as Business Kangaroo Island, and even though I am not connected to the island community as much as I was when working at the paper, these two non-profit groups really give me great joy and I still feel that sense of connection to islanders and the businesses.

Why did you join Business Kangaroo Island and how do you see it helping your business?

I think any business or group that helps other businesses grow is a great and admirable thing. Whether I was helping Business Kangaroo Island with its website and printables or not, I would still have joined. I am a part of many Australian online and in-person networking groups who are also focused on businesses helping other businesses, entrepreneurs helping entrepreneurs, and women business owners helping other women business owners with support, networking, and knowledge and I have personally learned more in the last few years than I ever had from tertiary study.

I believe that Business Kangaroo Island should be supported and encouraged as much as possible, and I want to acknowledge that the volunteering committee are a dedicated team of business owners themselves with a wealth of practical knowledge.

Business Kangaroo Island is helping my business learn, grow and evolve, and I believe it will help others too.

What are some positive opportunities you see for Kangaroo Island businesses in the future?

Even though Kangaroo Island businesses can do it tough at times, I feel there is always hope and optimism within the community for businesses to keep evolving, keep developing, keep growing. Those that have survived the hard times are doing something very right.

I personally believe that the new airport will bring some fresh opportunities for local businesses. I know that within the community there are mixed opinions on the subject and this creates uncertainty and hesitation among business owners. But it does open up great discussion about ideas and growth for the community. The cruise ships visiting the island is also an exciting development for local business owners.

I’m reminded of a TED talk speaker I watched online recently who mentioned that there are five essential elements that lead to business success: Ideas, Team, Business Model, Funding and Timing. Of all five elements, he said that Timing was the number one key to success. A business being in the right place at the right time and offering what no other has thought of is the key to big successes like Facebook and YouTube, and that same principle can be applied to island businesses too.

I believe that any new opportunities that arise on Kangaroo Island should be seen with great excitement in the business community, and as a great time to evaluate your business and where you want it to head, or perhaps as a chance to start something new entirely. Embrace the new, and keep Kangaroo Island moving forward.

Many thanks to Simone Halloran of Little Birdy Web & Design for being our Featured Business. Business Kangaroo Island presents this summary for our members who may be interested.

The research currently being undertaken has focussed around the seafood industry and eco-tourism in SA.Pup numbers are a useful indicator of population size. From previous research a pup multiplier of 4.76 is used for predicting the LNFS population. In SA 29 colonies were monitored with an estimated 20,500 pups being born in Jan/Feb 2014.Half of the pups born in the state are from sites located on KI (10,133, about half at Cape Gantheaume and half at Cape du Couedic). Most of the remaining (9,711) pups are born on North and South Neptune Island and Liguaena Islands. For KI region pup production in 2014 was 10,133 so total estimate is 48,138. The SA population is estimated at 97,200. (however this 4.76 multiplier is probably too high given that many populations appear to be stabilising now).

LNFS trends in abundance;

Sealing industry decimated natural LNFS populationsPopulations are recovering from the sealing industryWe have seen a 3.6 fold increase in LNFS numbers between 1988 & 2013 (when monitoring commenced)Represents approx. 5% per year growth in population across the state – with the strongest growth on KI (Mainly due to fur seals recently colonising KI, probably from the Neptune ISlands which are now full).Colonies on KI (Gantheaume) are getting quite full – new colonies are slowly developing in some areas however the best sites are obviously taken and the remaining sites are small and less favourable.Population increases are flattening out – some colonies have peaked (e.g. Neptunes and Liguanea Islands); indicated by lower pup production.

LNFS public perceptions;

They are a feral animal - LNFS are a native Australian animal. They are not an introduced/feral fur seal from NZ.They are over abundant – call for seal culls (like kangaroos) – LNFS populations are recovering from past exploitation. They are not like kangaroos which have increased in number due to improved grazing/pastures and water supply brought on by improvements to the landscape through agricultural/farming practices.

Interactions with fisheries – Current Research;

There is a research program investigating the impacts of seals on seafood industries being conducted by SARDI (funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, FRDC). The project is due to conclude in late 2016 – with findings likely to be reported around this time next year. (FRDC)The project is examining seal diets, movement and spatial overlap with fishing and aquaculture industries (satellite tracking), modelling impacts on the ecosystem and fish production, and also

Socio/economic surveys to assess perceptions of seal impacts on aquaculture and fishing industries and other stakeholders.

Tracking;

Tracked 2 animals from the Kingscote Jetty in October 2015Both animals did not stay in the Kingscote area for sustained periods –both spent about one month hauled out in breeding colonies in the Cape Gantheaume WPA. My one-man business has grown into a successful broad-ranging electrical services business. Our long list of regular clients includes small and large businesses, primary producers, government, quality builders and homeowners and our team has a reputation for professionalism, quality and reliability.

Before returning to KI with wife Louise to start a family, I had many years of experience working in Adelaide, interstate and overseas, which has expanded my trade knowledge and skills base. My role as a project manager for one of Australia’s leading automation firms - Sage Automation - has helped me develop from an electrician to a contractor with the ability to execute a variety of projects.

I’m excited about what the next few years hold for Kangaroo Island – the long-anticipated growth period and a new wave of transformation.

What is new for Island Electrics?

We are working on some pretty interesting new architectural and high-end residential builds. It’s always good to work on houses that are a bit outside the square. This area of the market will only strengthen as the Island gets more exposure on the world stage. It's great to get involved as a local tradesperson and the results are some of the most quality builds you get. This is to the credit of the builders that we service and the other trades involved.

We will assist Alano Water in coming months with the electrical installation at the new Penneshaw Community Wastewater Management Scheme. As more of a commercial and industrial specification, it makes a good contrast to our domestic projects. It will give my team great exposure to other areas of the trade, helping them to develop and grow their skills.

We are now preparing Island Electrics for the tendering process for major project work (mainly the airport development). I am confident in our ability to deliver any scope of works that is put in front of us.

How does your business contribute to the island's business community?

Island Electrics prides itself on looking after businesses first. It’s hard enough to do business on KI when things are running smoothly, so when breakdown and unforeseen issues arise it’s good to know there are reliable and quality service providers who can deliver quick turnarounds. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

Why did you join Business Kangaroo Island and how do you see it helping your business?

I have been with BKI from its early stages as a member of the initial working committee. I felt a real need for positive business advocacy as fear and negativity was getting way too much airplay. At the time I remember so much negative sentiment being expressed across the community due mainly to a lack of sound information sharing. This made way for uncertainty and a lack of business confidence. I run a service business that can only be truly a success if the businesses that it serves are prospering and profitable. With a simple, direct and honest charter, Business Kangaroo Island will ensure all KI businesses and sectors have the opportunity to thrive and prosper during KI's new positive direction.

What are some positive opportunities you see for Kangaroo Island businesses in the future?

I am an optimist when it comes to KI and its prospects. Because I have had a great opportunity to travel, work and live elsewhere I have been able gain a much deeper appreciation of what we do have on KI. I do not wish the charm of the place to be spoilt, but I do hope that with smart investment and wise planning, our kids will have more opportunity to stay longer past school and gain quality meaningful career paths.

Many thanks to Ray Wadsworth for sponsoring this month's BKI Newsletter and being part of our Featured Business.

BUSINESS SA EVENT - Don't miss this!

Kangaroo Island businesses will have a unique opportunity to network with the Chief Executive of Business SA, Nigel McBride (pictured), at an informal presentation on Tuesday, April 12.
